Overview

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek explores Nepal’s remote eastern Himalaya, leading to the foothills of the world’s third-highest mountain, Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586 m). The route passes through untouched villages, dense rhododendron forests, and spectacular alpine scenery, offering a true wilderness experience away from crowds.

Itinerary

    • Accommodation:

    • Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer to your hotel.
      Evening trek briefing and equipment check.

    • Fly to Bhadrapur in eastern Nepal, then drive through tea-growing hills and lush forests to Taplejung, the starting point of your trek.
       

    • Accommodation:

    • Altitude:

       921M

    • Descend through terraced fields and Limbu villages. Walk along the Tamur River, crossing several suspension bridges.
       

    • Accommodation:

    • Altitude:

       1,270M

    • Follow the Tamur River valley through subtropical forests and small settlements. Chiruwa is a lively village with mixed ethnic groups.
       

    • Accommodation:

    • Continue through cardamom farms and forests to reach Sekathum, near the junction of the Ghunsa and Simbuwa rivers.

    • A steep, forested trail leads through bamboo and rhododendron groves. The landscape starts to change as you ascend into higher altitudes.

    • Gradual uphill climb through dense forests and waterfalls. Reach Gyabla, a Tibetan-style village surrounded by high cliffs.

    • The trail passes through beautiful pine and rhododendron forests before entering the broad Ghunsa Valley. Ghunsa is a charming Sherpa village with prayer flags and a small monastery.

    • Rest and acclimatize. You can take a short hike to Lobsang La or visit the monastery.
       

    • Accommodation:

    • Altitude:

       4,050M

    • Gradual ascent along the Ghunsa Khola with views of Jannu Himal (7,710 m). The trail crosses small bridges and landslide-prone areas before reaching Kambachen.

       4,780M

    • A high-altitude trail through glacial moraine and rocky terrain. Enjoy magnificent views of Kanchenjunga and surrounding peaks.
       

    • Accommodation:

    • Hike to Pangpema for breathtaking views of the north face of Kanchenjunga (8,586 m). After spending time at the base camp, return to Lhonak.
       

    • Accommodation:

    • Retrace your steps back to Ghunsa, descending through alpine landscapes and crossing small streams.
       

    • Accommodation:

       4,290M

    • Climb steadily through pine and rhododendron forests to reach Selele La, a high camp used for crossing into the southern valley.
       

    • Accommodation:

    • Early morning crossing of Selele La and Sinion La passes. Enjoy spectacular mountain views before descending to Cheram.
       

    • Accommodation:

    • Altitude:

       4,580M

    • Gradual climb through alpine meadows and moraine. Views of Kabru, Rathong, and Kanchenjunga dominate the skyline.
       

    • Accommodation:

      Overnight at lodge.

    • Hike to the South Base Camp for incredible close-up views of Kanchenjunga’s southern face and Yalung Glacier. Return to Cheram.
       

    • Accommodation:

       2,995M

    • Descend through rhododendron forests following the Simbuwa Khola river.
       

    • Accommodation:

    • Altitude:

    • A long day descending through forests and crossing several suspension bridges to reach the village of Yamphudin.

    • Altitude:

    • Walk through cardamom farms, rice terraces, and Limbu villages.
       

    • Accommodation:

      Overnight at hotel in Birtamod.

    • Drive down to the plains of eastern Nepal, passing through tea gardens and small towns.
       

    • Accommodation:

      Overnight at hotel.

    • Return to Kathmandu. Free evening for rest or shopping.
       

    • Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
